About Ruskin
The Pilkington Recreation Club was formed in 1847 and its main site was Ruskin Drive Sportsground. Over the years it became the hub of sport within St Helens. Funded directly by Pilkington PLC until the early 1990’s the grounds have played host to many sports clubs including most of those you still see playing today.
In the early 90’s, Pilkington PLC wound up the Recreation Club and transferred the lease of the grounds to a subsidiary company called Ruskin Leisure. This company developed the grounds and invested in redeveloping the infrastructure we see today including the Health & Fitness club.
In 2011, with falling profits NSG (the new owners of Pilkington PLC) decided to sell the assets of Ruskin Leisure and close the business down.
In September 2010, the sports fields were transferred over to St Helens Council. In June 2011, a group of local people, purchased the Health and Fitness club, Pavilion Bar, Percival Suite and surrounding offices and workshops with a view to keeping the facility open for local people to use.
The new owners Ruskin are four local people, Stephen Palfrey, Simon Holling, Paul Rees and Stuart Craig. Stephen, Stuart and Simon all have other businesses that operate in the local area and all Directors have a long association with Ruskin Drive Sportsground. Their long term aim is to once again make Ruskin the hub of sport in St Helens.
